(10 October 2018, Hong Kong) An independent non-profit making charitable organization, Sodata Analytics Foundation Association (“Sodata Analytics”) is pleased to announce today the 3rd “Donation Ranking of Main Board Listed Companies in Hong Kong” onHong Kong’s first Philanthropy Big Data Platform (www.sodataanalytics.com), with a new record high total donation amount by the listed companies in Hong Kong. Sodata Analytics aims to encourage the engagement of listed companies in philanthropy, for the benefit of the sustainable development of community and environment.

Sodata Analytics Foundation Association collects and consolidates the data of donations of all Main Board listed companies listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, including blue chips and red chips, and conducts different analysis including number of listed companies engaging in charity donations, average annual donation and donation as a percentage of sales and profits made by listed companies etc.

The data analysis report of the “Donation Ranking of Listed Companies in Hong Kong 2018” illustrates that in 2017, 1,826 Hong Kong mainboard-listed companies donated a total of HK$ 16.291 billion, up 27.62% year-on-year from 2016. The average donation was HK$ 8.92 million, up 18.93% year-on-year from 2016. A total of 959 listed companies participated in the donation, 78 more than in 2016.

Data from the same period shows that Chinese companies dominated the Top 10 Main Board listed companies by total donation amount. Evergrande, HSBC Holdings, Tencent, Country Garden, and PetroChina were among the Top five contributors. Evergrande topped the list, with a huge donation up to RMB 5 billion over the past year, for poverty alleviation, education, environmental protection and other aspects.

According to the report, real estate and financial industries ranked Top two industries in the donation list. Most of the Top 10 companies on the donation list come from the real estate and financial industries, indicating that companies from these sectors attach greater importance to the development of social welfare and corporate social responsibility.

The Philanthropy Big Data Platform has a search engine for public to easily access the donation ranking data, to promote the transparency of philanthropy information, to foster the mutual communications between donors and charity organizations by disclosing more information of donations made by different listed companies, and in the long run to help more charitable organizations receive more donations. The Philanthropy Big Data Platform also continues to innovate and has created a relevant app on Wechat, making it easier for charity workers to learn about the dynamics and directions of the charity donations by the many listed companies, whilst inspiring more corporate and individual philanthropy in realizing greater social value.

Mr. Michael Yip, one of the founders of Sodata Analytics commented, “Corporate social responsibility is now emerging as a worldwide trend. ESG investment is widely valued by funds, companies in various industries and individual social investors. Since its inception in 2006, the UN principles on responsible investment (PRI) has attracted the support of more than 1,800 signatories, which managed more than $68 trillion worth of assets as of April 2017. While creating long-term value and realizing economic benefits, ESG's responsible investment can bring more social benefits and ecological benefits and achieve win-win results in a positive cycle. At the same time, social impact bonds are becoming more popular in the market, and are being widely deployed around the world. According to our Sodata portfolio study, the top 100 performing CSR companies have demonstrated alpha return with lower volatility in the past three years. It is expected that there are huge opportunities for social impact investment in Hong Kong and mainland China.”
